in the sleepy old town of bethlehem
two soldiers lay in bed
and one says to the other one i think i’ve got a way out

we will go the american army and get a suitcase full of guns
and we can rob the little caravans that pass on their way out

said one soldier to another as he sharpened up his knife
i have stolen enough money to support us for the rest of our lives
by threatening merchants with violence
they escaped the cycle of work
and became the petty warlords of the road on the way out

one day an army constable
with his drummer came up the road
to send the two soldiers cross the sea to fight a war

but they struck that army officer with the flat end of his sword
and they kicked the little drum on down the road on the way out
